What your electricity priceThe price customers pay for electricity consists of the cost of the energy, the cost of transferring it to the customer’s property and taxes. Customers are free to choose their electricity supplier. Changing electricity supplier only affects the cost of the energy itself; the electricity transfer is always carried out by the company responsible for the local distribution network.

The cost of electricity depends on its production costs, such as the cost of fuels. On the Scandinavian market electricity prices are also affected by the availability of hydropower. Other factors influencing energy prices include carbon credits and the temperature.
Electricity tax is a tax on electricity production which is payable to the Finnish government. It is split into two categories; homes are in the higher category.
VAT is payable on electricity, electricity transfer, electricity tax and service fees. Starting from 1.7.2010 VAT is charged at 23%.
